Protagonist Motivation
Doon Harrow and Lina Mayfleet (found in the character section) are noticing the power outages are getting more frequent, and with their new jobs they plan to save Ember. With Doon working in the Pipeworks which contains the generator, and Lina working as a messenger they're finding out secrets that will help them find a way out of Ember. When Lina finds a box in the back of her closet she opens it and finds a map of Ember torn and worn out. As she pieces it together she realizes it shows a way out of Ember, but the only way to get out is through the Pipeworks. With Doon's help they run through the Pipeworks aching for a way out. As they reach the end they find a river and boats that were supposed to be used by the people of Ember. Also they find a journal saying the builders of Ember took 100 adults and 100 kids to make sure the human race would survive. As they climb up a steep mountain and out into the world above, they had never imagined that they were living underground. They take a rock and tie a note to it hoping someone will find it and come join them in the world above Ember, the real world.
Antagonist Motivation
In the novel, The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau ( located in the about the author section) the antagonist happens to be the same man that caused all the power outages. From what we know of he goes by mayor number seven from many years ago. He was the man who believed that inside the locked metal box held a cure for his sickness, he eventually died and drop the box in his cluttered closet "200 years later the box quietly clicked open" the novel states on page 3.
Another antagonist is the current leader of Ember Mayor Cole ( to learn about Mayor Cole go to the character section.) He is a selfish man that only wants himself to escape Ember and is with holding evidence from his people.

Climax
The climax is the highest point!
The climax of the story is when Lina and Doon find the map of the way to the world above Ember. The only problem was that the the map was torn and ripped, but they managed to piece it back together. Then they were off into the pipe works searching for the world above ember.
Conflict
Person vs Nature is important to the story because when Lina and Doon try to find a way out of Ember the power outages become more frequent. They know that soon the power will go out forever, but they also know there is a way out it's a race against time for them, they must get to the world out side before the lights go for . Also in the book The City of Ember one of the main themes is person vs person. This is a main theme because Lina is trying to find a way out while Mayor Cole only want to find a way out for him self. As her and Doon set aside their differences they find a way out before the Mayor does. Also Lina and Doon want Mayor Cole to reveal what he knows and share his secrets with Ember.
Outcome
The outcome of the story is that in the end friendship and perseverance always prevail. For example Doon and Lina set aside their differences and become friends to save Ember. Also They were determined to find a way out of Ember. It just goes to show that no mater how old you are you can still make a difference.
